Affordable cesspool conversions offer new hope for Sonoma County homeowners
Homeowners in areas like Monte Rio, Rio Nido, and Forestville who still rely on old cesspool systems now have more affordable upgrade options. These outdated systems dump untreated waste directly into the ground and pose environmental risks, particularly near the Russian River.
The 2024 revisions to the OWTS manual (onsite wastewater treatment systems) now allow cesspool conversions into seepage or leaching pits at significantly reduced costs. Rather than spending $50,000 to $70,000 on full septic replacement, conversions now cost approximately $15,000 to $25,000.
The conversion process involves installing a tank ahead of the existing cesspool, adding gravel, and setting up dispersal piping. Greg Schram, an engineer with Adobe Septic in Santa Rosa, explains: “Converting an existing cesspool can cost between $15,000 to $25,000. It’s much cheaper than installing a new septic system.”
Section 20.3 of the updated manual eliminates previously required expensive testing procedures, including soil evaluations, percolation tests, and groundwater assessments, reducing both hassle and expenses for homeowners.
Properties within 600 feet of the Russian River face additional requirements since it’s classified as an impaired water body. County approval and potentially supplementary safeguards may be necessary to protect the river.
Homeowners should consult qualified septic professionals and the Sonoma County Permit and Resource Management Department before beginning any work to ensure compliance with regulations and site-specific requirements.
