There’s a special someone padding down the halls of Forestville School — and she’s got four paws, a wagging tail and a talent for making everyone smile. Gretel, the school’s beloved comfort dog, just celebrated her third birthday on Oct. 9, and the entire campus joined in to wish her a happy day.

Since joining the Forestville School community, Gretel has become a trusted friend. Every morning, she greets students with a calm presence and bright eyes that seem to say, “You’ve got this.” During stressful moments, she’s there for quiet cuddles or a reassuring nudge. Teachers say her visits can turn a tough day around in seconds.

Gretel came to Forestville through PALS (Paws as Loving Support), a local program based right in Forestville that trains therapy and comfort dogs to work in schools and community settings. Her role was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Forestville Education Foundation, which continues to champion programs that nurture student well-being and connection.

When she’s off duty, Gretel heads home with the Mills family, who provide her with love, long walks and plenty of treats. At home, she enjoys chasing her favorite tennis ball, snuggling up for story time and taking well-earned naps after a full week of service at school.

Now in her third year, Gretel has become an essential part of the campus culture. From kindergartners learning to read to eighth graders preparing for high school, she’s a gentle reminder that compassion and kindness matter — and that sometimes the best support comes with fur and a wagging tail.

Happy birthday, Gretel, and thank you for making Forestville School a brighter, calmer and kinder place for everyone.
